Elmira College is an institution of higher education founded in 1855, which offer women's equivalent to the finest men's colleges. And in 1969, Elmira College became a coeducational institution. By the age of approaching two centuries, Elmira College is one of the oldest colleges that granted equal degrees to both men and women.

In 1940, Elmira College get an award charter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious honors society. One of the well-known figure at the time, Mark Twain, wrote his masterpieces in Elmira, just a few miles from the campus. And until today, Elmira College still keep extensive archive of his original work.

There are several ancient buildings are still standing in Elmira College, and seven of the building to get the recognition and registered in the National Registrar of Historic Places.

One of the university's annual tradition that has existed since 1918, the Mountain Day, wherein the President cancels classes to provide pupils and faculty a day off to come together outside the classroom. At the event, students must sing to earn this reward. While the event the Holiday Banquet & Ball, students invite their favorite faculty members or administrators to join them for a traditional Thanksgiving holiday dinner and then enjoy a weekend of holiday festivities.

Students can join and participate in university sports clubs to develop their talents in the hobby and exercise. Elmira College has sports teams that participate in the NCAA Division III athletics, with the mascot, dubbed the Soaring Eagle.
